Rep. Andrews: Awaiting the Big J

March 29, 2001

Today, the Battleship New Jersey has been moved to an interim berth along the Delaware River in preparation for her final move to the Camden Waterfront.  The future floating museum will serve as the heart and soul of a rapidly growing tourism center along the Camden Waterfront providing an excellent complement to the New Jersey Aquarium, Camden Children's Garden and the future home of the Camden Riversharks Baseball team.

I have been working with my colleague Rep. Jim Saxton to ensure that the Army Corp of Engineers completes the preparations necessary to permit the ship's access to its final berth.
In February, Rep. Jim Saxton and I met in Washington with the Assistant Secretary of the Army to determine how we could help to ensure this project proceeded on schedule.  The Home Port Alliance deserves credit for its efforts to get everything ready for the Battleship's final move sometime this Summer.

I look forward to the day when grandparents, parents, and children, teachers and students and the veterans that served this country can board this great ship and share many new and old experiences with one another.  I thank everyone who has been and continues to be involved in this effort--The Homeport Alliance, the volunteers helping to put the ship in working order and the thousands of veterans who worked to bring the USS New Jersey home.
