REP. ANDREWS: US POLICY SHOULD BE TO REMOVE SADAAM HUSSEIN
April 3, 2002

In the wake of recent comments and actions by Saddam Hussein and his government in Iraq, it is more evident that the United States must remove Sadaam Hussein from power if we are to be successful in our goal to end global terror. It is widely known that Iraq has provided reward payments to the families of suicide bombers to help recruit individuals to execute these acts of terror. Saddam Hussein has now increased the money paid to the relatives of suicide bombers from $10,000 to $25,000 and has guaranteed $10,000 to the families of individuals killed in gun battles with Israelis. Since Iraq increased its payments last month, 12 suicide bombers have successfully struck inside Israel, including the massacre that occurred during the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Recently, Sadaam has also called on other oil producing Arab countries to embargo oil to gain leverage over Western Nations. His hope is to gain leverage over Western Nations, like the United States, to influence our policies in the Middle East and divert our attention from our goal to defeat terror. Despite this call to action, Hussein has received little if any support from other oil producing Nations.

When intelligence and military conditions are right, we must remove Sadaam Hussein from power. His rhetoric and actions fuel those who seek to perpetrate terror against innocent civilians.
