REP. ANDREWS SECURES $2 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR PAULSBORO'S PORT FACILITY: PROJECT WILL BRING JOBS TO THE REGION, REVITALIZE SOUTH JERSEY ECONOMY
I am happy to announce that as a result of the passage of bill H.R. 4818, $2 million in federal funding will be distributed by the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Paulsboro port project. Over the past year, it has been my pleasure to work with Paulsboro Mayor and Third District Assemblyman John Burzichellli to ensure that this port facility project, located on the old BP chemical and oil storage plant in Paulsboro, will be successfully completed.
For South Jersey residents, I believe that the unveiling of the recent plan to link the deepwater port facility in Paulsboro to the I-295 highway through the construction of an overpass is welcoming news. There are numerous benefits of the port project. First, it will improve the quality of life for the residents of the Borough of Paulsboro by allowing trucks carrying cargo to avoid residential streets by using the port overpass instead. Before this project was undertaken, tractor-trailer traffic would have traveled right through the residential streets of Paulsboro.
Additionally, the port project is essential for promoting mobility and economic prosperity in the South Jersey region. The overpass ramp will bring approximately 3,000 new jobs to the port and produce over $30 million in local, county, state and federal revenue. Finally, the port project will provide the trucking industry with direct access through the new Interstate I-295 ramp to the port for distribution.
To meet the vital needs of South Jersey, I will continue to support transportation enhancement projects by bringing back federal funding from Washington for plans like the Paulsboro Port project so South Jersey residents can reap the dual benefits of safe, efficient and accessible transportation systems as well as from the opportunities provided by such vital economic development.
