REP. ANDREWS ANALYZES U.S. PORT SECURITY

Dubai Ports World, previously authorized by the Bush Administration to purchase six major U.S. ports, have now offered to transfer these port operations to an "American entity."  While this is a welcome development, I still have many questions which need to be answered to ensure our ports' security.  The acid test will be whether the new ownership is an American company which is qualified for security clearance through the United States Government; only then will this controversy be settled.

We must also address the broader problem of foreign-owned companies, who do not always have the best interest of American security at heart, managing other parts of our nation's critical infrastructure.  Congress is now considering a number of proposals that would make our infrastructure more secure.  I am still studying these measures and will support the bill that will best protect the American people and preserve the U.S.' preeminent role in attracting foreign investment.
