REP. ANDREWS HOSTS GRANT WORKSHOP FOR FIREFIGHTERS AND EMS

On March 2, 2006 I hosted a workshop at the Erial Volunteer Fire Company to help guide our firefighters and EMS technicians in the FY2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant application process. This federal program through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security awards equipment and training to our underfunded first responders. From protective clothing to pumper trucks, the equipment awarded through this program has saved the lives of countless members of the public and our heroic firefighting personnel.

As Co-Chairman of the Congressional Fire Caucus, I supported the legislation that strengthened the federal government's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. I am pleased to report that $1,984,482 in firefighter grants have been awarded to the First Congressional District of New Jersey in FY2005 and I have brought home $6,238,565 since the program’s inception in 2001.

Assistance to Firefighter Grants are awarded on a competitive basis and applications are peer reviewed by fellow fire departments. It is imperative that our region’s applicants submit strong applications which adhere to the program’s guidelines. It is my pleasure to host a yearly Fire Grant workshop in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security to give our local firefighters the tools to enhance their competitiveness. I will continue to work with all of our first responders to ensure they receive the resources necessary to protect the public and themselves.

Applications are currently being accepted for the FY2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program and the deadline for submission is April 7, 2006. Details can be found at http://www.firegrantsupport.com/
