REP. ROB ANDREWS ANNOUNCES $ 7 MILLION GRANT FOR TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN CAMDEN; MEETS WITH FOUR NEW COMPANIES WHO HAVE COME TO THE CENTER IN ITS FIRST YEAR

CAMDEN, N.J.--Rep. Rob Andrews (D-Haddon Heights) today announced that the United States Department of Defense has awarded another $7 million dollars to the second year of operation of the new Technology Center in center city Camden, bringing the two-year total for the Center to $19.5 million.  Since it’s opening on March 1, 2001, the Center has attracted four new companies and 25 jobs to the City of Camden.  "This is just the beginning of the building of a new private sector economy for our city," Andrews said.

Rep. Andrews joined with Victor Felise of the US Army CECOM (Communications and Electronics Command), Lou Bucelli of the University City Science Center's Port of Technology, Harvil Eaton, Senior Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies at Drexel University and Mark Lister of the Sarnoff Corporation, the partner organizations responsible for the management and development of this venture, to announce the new funding and to visit the four new employers, located in the L-3 Building in Camden City.

"I am pleased to report that we have made significant progress in our effort to create a high tech development center within the City of Camden, however we have much more work ahead of us," said Andrews.  "I would like to personally thank Mr. Lou Bucelli for his hard work and expertise in attracting these four new businesses and I anticipate similar successes in the months to come.  I am encouraged by the addition of these four new companies and look forward to securing an additional round of funding this summer to support continued operations of this exciting venture."

In April of last year, Andrews announced the creation of the ACIN Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology and secured $12.5 million dollars in 2001 to fund the initial startup and operations for 2001.  The ACIN Center is a project funded by Department of Defense (DOD) through the US Army CECOM located at Fort Monmouth,  New Jersey.  The project has been awarded to Drexel University and the Sarnoff Corporation with management of the Incubator performed by the University City Science Center/Port of Technology.  The Center's research function is directed by Stu Personick.  The economic development effort is led by Lou Bucelli and Greg Garnick of Drexel University's Port of Technology.

The four new companies, InterraTech, Secureant, Channel Logistics, Gestalt LLC, each produce applications for both military and commercial use.  Interratech has developed proprietary Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) software for sending and receiving electronic business transactions with trading partners. Secureant is an advanced wireless software communications company that delivers enhanced secured technology through a unique and powerful software program designed for consumer, corporate and military usage.  Channel Logistics provides a web-base private logistics networks specializing in the international ocean and shipping industry.  Gestalt offers a broad spectrum of products and services to governments and Fortune 500 companies from strategic assessments to the design and implementation of software systems focused on integrating and operating distributed information systems.

Congressman Andrews, working in conjunction with Rep. Jim Saxton (NJ-03), New Jersey Senator Bob Torricelli and Pennsylvania Senators Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter, has been successful in obtaining $19.5 million in funding for this project to date.  Rep. Andrews, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, has made this project one of his top funding priorities and will seek additional operational funding for the ACIN Center in this year's defense appropriations bill.
