| Congressman Andrews Commemorates
59th Anniversary Of Pearl Harbor Tragedy CAMDEN, N.J.—With the U.S.S. New Jersey serving as a fitting backdrop for this solemn occasion Congressman Andrews (D-Haddon Heights) today paid tribute to those veterans that served and died for their country at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was joined by members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association as well as veterans from every service and era. “It is an honor to stand here today with the brave American veterans gathered in remembrance of those who gave their lives defending their country on that fateful day of December 7, 1941,” said Andrews. “It is important that we ensure that the memory of these brave men and women live on in the hearts and minds of the people of this great nation. I can not think of a more fitting tribute than to be standing here today with these heroic men and women in front of the Battleship New Jersey which serves as a symbol for this region of the selflessness and dedication this generation exemplified.” In addition, Andrews was also joined by Al Matthews, a member of the 52nd Field Artillery, 24th Division who was present at the Schofield Barracks during the Pearl Harbor attacks. Mr. Matthews spoke of his experiences and explained the meaning of Pearl Harbor day from the perspective of the men who served there. Gov. Jim Florio was among other notable guests in attendance. This year’s remembrance was held at Camden’s Broadway Terminal beside
the U.S.S. New Jersey and marked Congressman Andrews 10th Annual
Pearl Harbor Day commemoration. It is particularly special as this
was the first time this commemoration was held in proximity to the Battleship
New Jersey since the decision was made to permanently berth the ship in
Camden.
