March 10, 2004—Today U.S. Representative Trent Franks announced the appointment of Centennial High School Senior Antonia Carreon to the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Independence High School Senior Sterling Williams to the Air Force Academy.
“I am honored to take part in this momentous announcement,” Franks said. “Antonia and Sterling are two truly outstanding young Arizonans, demonstrating both excellence in education and exemplary character. I am so pleased that they are willing to serve America nobly, while pursuing an ambitious higher education.”
Sterling Williams, son of Theresa and Kenneth Williams, wrote the following in his application essay:
“I would like to join the Air Force to serve my country and utilize the skills and knowledge that I will acquire at the academy…people who have been given opportunities have an obligation to take advantage of them and become leaders…I would like to join the Air Force Academy to carry on the tradition of honorable military service in my family. If accepted into the academy, I will be the third generation in my family to serve the country in the United States Air Force.”
Antonia Carreon is the daughter of Nancy Carreon, and wrote the following:
“I know that West Point prepares graduates for selfless service to this country. I believe West Point has an outstanding curriculum that no other college or university can compete with…I know that confidence, discipline, integrity, and loyalty all establish a devotion to “Duty, Honor, Country” for the corps of cadets. I like the fact that West Point not only focuses on academics and athletics, but is very big on loyalty, integrity, responsibility, and honor.”
