Rep. Baca Inducted Into Rialto Hall of Fame

Local Congressman's Charitable Work, Athletic Prowess Garner Recognition

San Bernardino, CA – This Saturday, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) was inducted into the City of Rialto’s Hall of Fame.  The induction took place at the 3rd annual City of Rialto Hall of Fame ceremony, held at the Carl Johnson Gymnasium in Rialto.

At the ceremony, City officials cited Rep. Baca’s extensive charitable work, his involvement in athletic events like the Congressional Baseball Game, and his work in introducing and passing the Arnold Palmer Congressional Gold Medal Act as significant factors that led to his induction.

“I thank the City of Rialto, and am truly humbled by this honor,” said Congressman Baca.  “This recognition is proof that if you work hard, believe in yourself, and help other people – you can achieve anything.  I am proud of my achievements, not only on the athletic field, but also in moving our community forward and having a positive impact on the lives of others.”

Through his involvement in the Congressional Baseball Game, held every summer with Democratic and Republican Members of Congress competing against each other on the diamond, Rep. Baca has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Washington area charities.  He has also won the Democratic MVP award 6 times for his outstanding work as a starting pitcher for the Democratic team.

Rep. Baca has also remained active in supporting local charities through his involvement in the Inland Empire.  In fact, earlier this month he made a $2,150 donation to the Bloomington Little League to help keep their lights on during night games.  In addition, Rep. Baca has worked in Congress to recognize the contributions of outstanding Americans, like golfing legend Arnold Palmer.  Rep. Baca introduced the Arnold Palmer Congressional Gold Medal Act, which was signed into law by President Obama earlier this year, in order to recognize Arnold Palmer for his contributions to numerous philanthropies, the game of golf, and society at large.

In addition to Rep. Baca, seven other individuals and two athletic teams were inducted into the Rialto Hall of Fame today:

  • Ronnie Lott - NFL Hall of Fame Football Player;
  • Al Jury -NFL Official;
  • Bill Batt - Rialto Girls Softball Coach, 39 years;
  • Scott Russell - CIF Champion Baseball Coach;
  • John Silva - Rialto Junior All American Football Official, 36 years;
  • Roger Birdsall - Little League Baseball Official, 46 years;
  • Lisa Marie Varon - Women's Wrestling Champion;
  • 2009 Eisenhower Basketball Team - State Champs; and,
  • 1993 Eisenhower Football Team - State Champs.

“I am grateful to the City of Rialto for recognizing my efforts to honor those individuals who have had a meaningful impact on our society, like Arnold Palmer,” continued Rep. Baca.  “It’s not just about his success on the links – although as a competitive golfer myself I certainly respect his athletic talent and winning results.  However, Arnold also has contributed significantly to American society and culture and is an outstanding role model, especially for young people.”
