Gingrey praises passage of Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act

“We closed a dangerous loophole today”

U.S. Congressman Phil Gingrey today praised the House passage of H.R. 748, the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA).  This legislation makes it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion in order to avoid state laws requiring parental notification.

“We closed a dangerous loophole today,” said Gingrey.  “The Georgia legislature has recently passed legislation requiring parental consent for minors seeking abortion, and H.R. 748 will ensure that bill can’t be circumvented.  We’re preventing 14- and 16-year old girls from being taken across state lines by abusive boyfriends or men who may have committed rape for the purpose of getting an abortion.  I’m proud we passed legislation to stop tragedies like this from happening.”

H.R. 748 passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 270 to 157.
