Gingrey calls Blair a hero

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey called British Prime Minister Tony Blair a “hero” and “a great friend to the United States” after Blair address to a joint session of Congress on Thursday.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a more eloquent speech about the responsibility of freedom-loving people to fight the scourge of terrorism.

“Prime Minister Blair has stood tall in the battle against terrorism since Sept. 11,” Gingrey said. “His commitment to peace and freedom has weathered great criticism at home and among his peers in Europe.

“As we drew nearer to war earlier this year, Blair’s courage led me to place a Union Jack outside of my office in Washington to show my appreciation for Blair and the British people. It’s still there today as the British troops continue to serve with Americans amid the continuing hostilities and dangers in Iraq.

“The British government has offered 45,000 troops to fight the war on terror. It has helped with the rebuilding of Afghanistan; it played a major role in defeating the regime of Saddam Hussein, and it continues to prove that it is America’s truest friend.”
