U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey introduced a bill in the House today that would ban federal approval of any drug intended to assist with suicide or induce abortion.
“The first rule of medicine is, “First, do no harm,” Gingrey said upon submitting his legislation. “Drugs manufactured to cause death are incompatible with the practice of medicine and the Federal Food and Drug Administration shouldn’t have the leeway to allow these drugs in the American market.”
The bill would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prohibit any drug that would “infringe the right to life.”
The abortion pill, RU-486, which is now available in the United States, would be banned retroactively under this legislation.
“The abortion pill has proven to be dangerous, causing harm, even death, to the mother,” Gingrey said. “It has no business being sold in U.S. pharmacies.”
