Partial-birth abortion ban a life-saver

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey issued the following statement on President Bush’s signing today of the partial-birth abortion ban and the temporary restraining order signed by a federal judge in Nebraska:

“As an Ob/Gyn, I delivered thousands of babies over a 28-year career. I never came across a situation where a partial-birth abortion procedure was needed to save the life or preserve the health of a mother. This barbaric procedure is not medically necessary. It simply does one thing: ends the life of a living human being.

“I’m terribly excited today that President Bush signed this ban into law, as he promised he would. In time, this new law will save hundreds of innocent lives and will grow our nation’s respect for life. My excitement is tempered by the decision of a federal judge to restrain implementation of this law. The partial-birth abortion ban will not endanger mothers’ lives; it preserves those of their children.”
