Congresswoman Hirono Announces Additional Federal Funding for Hawai’i Airports

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai’i) today announced an additional $5.88 million in U.S. Department of Transportation grants for improvements to two more Hawai’i airports, this time at the Lihue Airport on Kaua’i and the Hilo International Airport on the Big Island of Hawai’i.

$5.7 million in federal funds will go toward replacing the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system at Lihue Airport.  State transportation officials explain the existing HVAC system has outlived its useful service life and can no longer meet the needs of the airport and of the increasing number of travelers.

$189,000 in federal funds will be used to install a noise monitoring system at the Hilo International Airport.  This project involves the installation of six monitoring stations around the airport to record aircraft noise levels.  Administrators will use the collected data to determine noise mitigation measures to benefit those communities that live close to Hilo International.
