RANKING MEMBER RAHALL MARKS EARTH DAY 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Resources Committee Ranking Member Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) issued the following statement on Earth Day.

"As we celebrate Earth Day today, I am amazed by all that we continue to learn about the world around us, so long after the time, ages ago, when humankind was first put on the Earth. The constant discoveries of new species, new ways of harnessing nature, new findings about how the natural world works, deepen my sense of awe at God’s handiwork. Earth Day provides an opportunity to reflect and to renew our commitment to stewardship of our bountiful planet.

"As the Ranking Member on the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over a variety of environmental statutes and issues, I am on watch for any efforts by this Administration and the Republican-controlled Congress to denigrate our surroundings, including attempts to undermine cornerstone statues like the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Wilderness Act.

"This is, by no means, a small task. Based on the past few days of debate in the House on the energy bill, I can only believe that some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle want to celebrate ‘flat Earth Day’ with a 19th century energy policy.

"But their bravado should not discourage those that have the passion and the will to protect what God gave us."
