Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in remembrance of Pearl Harbor:
“Today, we again pause to remember that terrible moment when Americans at Pearl Harbor were attacked. In gratitude and respect, we stand together to honor the 2,400 human beings who died during those devastating hours 66 years ago, as well as those who were seriously wounded in the attack.
“To all of the families who have bravely borne the scars of this sacrifice over the years, we pledge that this nation will never forget the heroes claimed by history on December 7, 1941. In humility, we acknowledge that no words can adequately express our gratitude for the legacy of freedom purchased with their suffering.
“All across this great country, there are people who continue to bear memories of those devastating hours at Pearl Harbor, captured in aging photographs mounted with care on their walls. To them and their families, we offer the most eloquent words of respect that we know:
“‘Thank you for our freedom. We who are blessed to live in America will never forget your sacrifice. Know also that we will defend and exercise forever the freedom for which so many have paid the ultimate price.’”
