Washington, DC— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement regarding the 5thAnniversary of the War in Iraq:
“We have been sacrificing lives and taxpayer dollars to fuel a war in Iraq that this Administration began under an array of lies. Five years later, with nearly 4,000 American lives lost, tens of thousands of Americans wounded, millions of innocent Iraqis killed, and billions upon billions of dollars spent, our country is less secure, our armed forces are stretched alarmingly thin, our emergency war stockpiles are all but depleted, and there is still no end in sight.
“Yet, President Bush still insists on staying the course of this poorly-planned war. His current course will keep us in Iraq for at least ten years and cost American taxpayers at least $3 trillion, all the while continuing to put our own national security at risk. We cannot allow the President to continue driving our country into debt while turning his back on those who are suffering in our own backyard.
“My colleagues and I are committed to charting a new direction in Iraq—one that relies on multilateral and bilateral initiatives in the region, as well as an Iraqi government that can stand on its own. It is only by creating a strategy in Iraq that includes diplomatic relations at the international and regional levels that we will be able to redeploy our troops in a timely and responsible manner and begin restoring the damage that has been wrought on our national security, our military, and our nation’s reputation.”
