Baltimore, Md.—Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (Md.-07), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, joined Stephanie Hill, Vice President of Programs and Site Operations at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Middle River, to donate twenty computers and several printers to the Maritime Industries Academy, a Baltimore City Public School.
“This school has always boasted an amazing group of students with the potential to excel at any opportunity presented to them,” Congressman Cummings said. “I am grateful to Lockheed Martin for presenting these young men and women with endless new opportunities through their donation of new computers, and I look forward to continuing to assist in creating an environment allowing the Maritime Industries Academy to live up to its name and allow these students to truly flourish.”
The decision by Lockheed Martin to donate the computers—the first of its kind in Baltimore—came following a suggestion by Congressman Cummings that the company establish a relationship with the school.
“Technology is changing our world faster than it ever has before. It is critical that our young people have access to technology today, so they can be prepared for tomorrow,” said Stephanie Hill. “Lockheed Martin has been an integral part of the Baltimore community for nearly 80 years, and these computers will help the students at the Maritime Industries Academy develop the skills and knowledge they will need to be able to reach their full potential.”
Congressman Cummings has played a pivotal role in developing maritime-related programs at the Maritime Industries Academy, including supporting the development of maritime curriculum, the creation of a guest lecture series, and an internship program. He has ardently worked to strengthen ties between the Academy and Maryland’s maritime community to ensure that students enrolled in the school can explore the growing number of opportunities available in the maritime industry.
Lockheed Martin’s MS2 Maritime Security & Ship Systems line of business employs more than 600 people at its Middle River facility. It is a leader in developing launching systems for the military, advanced hull forms and automated ship systems, and innovative homeland security solutions. It also is leading the Lockheed Martin team that is building the Navy’s first Littoral Combat Ship.
Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.
