Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), a senior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement in response to the appointment of Mr. Robert Benmosche as the new CEO of AIG:

“I applaud AIG’s Board of Directors for moving quickly to find a new CEO, and I hope that Mr. Benmosche will take this opportunity to lead the company in a different direction than we have seen it take since receiving more than $180 billion in taxpayer assistance over the past year.

“I urge Mr. Benmosche to act in the interests of the American taxpayers—the ultimate shareholders of AIG—and to bring with him the transparency and accountability that are necessary for AIG to regain the trust of both the Congress and the American people. To that end, I encourage Mr. Benmosche to submit a full financial disclosure similar to that required by individuals appointed to senior positions within a federal agency.

“While I have sincere optimism about Mr. Benmosche’s ability to take the helm of AIG, I caution him that my colleagues and I will be closely watching his progress. We cannot afford to see more of the same reckless decisions that have been made by leadership at AIG. This company can do better, and I expect Mr. Benmosche to help it achieve that end.”
