| Join Sandy in Discussing Health Care Reform | ||
|
President Obama has set out an ambitious agenda that takes multiple actions to address dire economic conditions, including implementing the Recovery package, stabilizing the financial system, and addressing home foreclosures. There is no question that our current health care system is broken. A report released last week found that 86.7 million Americans – one third of all those under the age of 65 – lacked health insurance for some period during 2007 and 2008. We spend twice as much per person on health care as any other industrialized country, yet we lag behind other nations in terms of the quality of health care we receive. The current system burdens families, employers, and the country with unnecessarily high costs. And, as health care costs increase, U.S. businesses are less competitive in the global marketplace. It will take a lot of hard work to build the consensus necessary for reform, and involving the public in this national conversation is vital to our success. Over the next several months, my office will organize live town hall meetings, telephone town halls, and online conversations related to health care reform. We will also keep you posted through emails, letters, and newsletters. In addition, I want to have more in depth conversations with interested residents. These “Congressional Health Care Roundtables” will involve 10-12 individuals sitting down with me and my staff and talking to us and to each other about key priorities, experiences, and suggestions for reform. |
