Conyers Announces Grants for Woodward Avenue

Washington DC– Today, U.S. Representative John Conyers ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus announced that with the passage of H.R. 3550, the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2004,  Woodward Avenue is set to receive over $437,000.00 in National Scenic Byway Discretionary Funds for tourism related projects.  Conyers made the following remarks:

“I am happy to announce that I helped secure this grant for Woodward Avenue.  These funds will allow for the people of South East Michigan and visitors to the region to fully explore and learn about this historic byway.   Woodward Avenue is the oldest connection between the City of Detroit and its suburbs.  Nearly every mile of Woodward is flanked by landmarks which have shaped Detroit’s culture, including; Comerica Park, The Detroit Symphony Opera, museums, numerous parks, the Detroit Zoo, and many historic sites unique to Detroit. The National Scenic Byway Discretionary Funds, will aid in the economic development of the greater Metro-Detroit area.  There will be both walking and driving tours of the twenty-seven mile byway.  I am confident that this grant will bring commerce and jobs to the region.”
