Graves’ Reaction to the State of the Union

(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves issued the following statement after the President’s State of the Union Address to Congress.

“Tonight, during the State of the Union Address, the President attempted to convince the American people that he is committed to creating jobs, cutting spending and helping small businesses. However, the President’s record reveals a very different reality.

Small businesses have been under attack in Washington over the past year. The Administration and Congress have bailed out irresponsible players on Wall Street, they pushed policies that will increase costs on small businesses, and proposed taxing at every turn to pay for a big government agenda.

As Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, I think it is time that the administration and Congress get serious about creating jobs and getting federal spending under control.

Small businesses have struggled all year in a very difficult economy and all that they’ve gotten from Washington is more spending and more debt piled on their backs. The American people are asking ‘where are the jobs?’

At a time when the nation’s unemployment rate exceeds 10% for the first time in 26 years, the goal of Congress should be to create an environment for entrepreneurs to flourish and grow, not one that threatens further mandates from Washington.

If the administration is serious about creating jobs and getting the deficit under control it needs to abandon the agenda of higher taxes. Increasing taxes removes capital from our nation’s job creators and is especially harmful to small businesses.

With high unemployment and our economy in distress, the last thing small businesses need is more government intrusion, regulations and red tape. It’s time we listen to our small firms who have actually balanced a budget, made a payroll, and have actually created jobs."
