WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) today urged a solution to the AMEREN state settlement in the Taum Sauk matter, saying it is necessary to clear the way for rebuilding of the hydroelectric facility and reopening of the Johnson Shut-Ins.
“I’ve reached out to every party involved in this dispute and stressed the urgency of this situation. Today I urge AMEREN, Governor Blunt, Attorney General Nixon and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to reach a workable state settlement. We are really close to an agreement, but every day until one is reached places additional strain on the rural economy in the Eighth Congressional District. We need the jobs and the revenue from tourism at the Johnson Shut-Ins and the economic boost from reconstruction of the hydropower dam at Taum Sauk,” Emerson said.
“I’m very optimistic about an agreement, but we must move forward. We ought to be able to set the realistic goal of reopening the Johnson Shut-Ins in calendar year 2007. All it will take is a little elbow grease and diligence to detail. The people in this part of our state are ready to go. It’s time to get moving and to let everyone get on with the business of rebuilding and recovery.”
