FOR NEW GREENVILLE RESERVE CENTER Facility to House Army Reserve, National Guard |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
today announced that he was able to get more than $12 million in the Fiscal
Year 2000 draft Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill to construct
an Armed Forces Reserve Center in Greenville.
“This is good news for Greenville and all of Eastern North Carolina,” Jones said. “While we have focused a great deal on our agriculture, coastal, and housing needs, defense is another priority that deserves our utmost attention. Storm damage ravaged our local defense structures. I am pleased that Appropriations Chairman Bill Young was able to grant my request for this funding and I look forward to what the new facility will bring to Pitt County and to the men and women who serve our Armed Forces.” Hurricane Floyd destroyed the Army Reserve and the National Guard Readiness Centers in Greenville, displacing 420 Army Reservists and 210 Army National Guardsmen from the already overcrowded and over-utilized facilities. Damage to the centers was so severe that engineering assessments deemed it more cost effective to replace rather than repair the damage. Congressman Jones’ request for $12.348 million was granted in full. The funding will cover the costs of planning and design, center construction, an Organizational Maintenance Shop, an Area Maintenance Support Activity, unheated storage, approximately 12 acres of land acquisition, associated environmental costs, and anti-terrorism/force protection. |
