WASHINGTON— U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means today released the following statement regarding President Obama’s 2010 budget proposal:
“President Obama’s budget proposal is a refreshing return to the kind of responsible accounting that the American people expect from Washington. As a member of Congress I am relieved to be presented with an honest budget assessment for the first time in eight years. This document makes no attempt veil the seriousness of our dire economic conditions. It is a departure from the dangerous Bush administration practice of excluding billions in proposed funding for war, disaster relief and the alternative minimum tax. I applaud the Obama administration for breaking an irresponsible precedent and laying out the good, bad and ugly in a transparent way for America to judge.
“In addition to these improvements, this budget reflects a fundamental shift away from the failed policies that brought us to this point. The President’s call for a pay-as-you-go budget is an important first step that Congress must take to restore fiscal order and reduce the swelling deficit. Sustained tax cuts targeted to 95 percent of America’s workers, instead of the wealthiest one percent, will put money into the main street economy first and also benefit wall street. This budget will help give the people who fell behind for the last eight years a new opportunity to catch up with the disproportionate rise in health care costs, tuition and basics like utilities, gasoline and food. It will revolutionize the way we expend energy, access doctors, educate our students and compete in the global economy.
“The principles in this budget are well reasoned and innovative. They represent the change we need and prioritize the programs that will help America excel into the 21st century. I look forward to working with the Obama Administration to advance these budget priorities.”
