WASHINGTON, November 14, 2001 -- Cong. Charles Rangel, who has committed the resources of his New York Congressional office to aiding the families of victims of flight 587, today announced a package of assistance to be provided by American Airlines.

According to company officials, American Airlines will make available the following:

o  Funeral services for each passenger.

o  Shipment of remains to the Dominican Republic.

o  Travel to attend services for next of kin and immediate family.  Reduced rates will be provided for distant family.

o  Additional monetary assistance may be available to ease the burden of families.  Cash disbursements will go to the beneficiary listed in a will.  Where there is no will, disbursements will be made in the order of 1) spouse; 2) children; 3) parents; 4) siblings in the order prescribed by New York law.  Timing of distribution will depend upon identification of the next of kin.

Each victim’s family has been assigned to a member of the American Airlines Care Team, which began contacting families this morning.  If a family has not heard from the Care Team, they  should call American Airlines at 1-800-245-0999.
