BINGHAMTON - U.S. Representative Maurice Hinchey (NY-22) today commended the

Defense Logistics Agency for awarding a $42.9 million contract to Johnson Outdoors, Inc. for modular general purpose tent systems (MGPTS). Hinchey has been instrumental in strengthening the relationship between the Binghamton company and the U.S. military.
"Johnson Outdoors makes an excellent product and the Defense Department has recognized that," said Hinchey. "Ensuring that the military continues to buy tent systems from this great company is good for the men and women in the armed services and for the economy of the Southern Tier."
Johnson Outdoors is a leading global outdoor recreation company that designs, manufactures and markets watercrafts, motors, diving and outdoor equipment, in addition to its military tent systems. The company has more than 25 locations around the world and employs 1,400 people. The Binghamton facility employs 240.
In April, Johnson Outdoors received a $12 million delivery order from the Department of Defense. After the company lost a large contract this fall, Hinchey wrote to the Defense Department to express his disappointment that Johnson's stellar track record was not given enough weight in the decision-making process. A member of the House Appropriations Committee, Hinchey has also worked to appropriate funds that benefit Johnson Outdoors and the Southern Tier. He visited Johnson Outdoors in June of this year.
