While some U.S. Postal Service carriers will shift headquarters, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) assures residents in the City of Lackawanna that the Ridge Road Post Office will remain open, providing the full range of services to consumers.
In the beginning of January the nineteen carriers assigned to Lackawanna Post Office will be transferred to Southside Station on South Park Avenue. The shift is intended to improve efficiencies within the Post Office and will have no significant impact on front-office services.
“While we understand the economic pressures the U.S. Postal Service is experiencing and the need to make cost-effective changes, we want to see the Lackawanna Post office available to local consumers and open for business for years to come,” said Congressman Higgins. “We appreciate that the Post Office heard our argument for keeping the facility in Lackawanna open and thankful residents in the City will continue to see a consistent, high level of service in their community.”
On August 3, 2009 the Lackawanna Post office was included on a list of offices slated for closure. The same day, Congressman Higgins wrote to the United States Postmaster General objecting to the plan to close the Lackawanna site. In a continuing effort to keep Lackawanna off the list, the Congressman’s office followed up with a meeting and phone calls with post office leaders protesting the move. In November 2009 the Lackawanna Post Office was officially removed from the list of potential closures.
