Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the winners of the annual Congressional art competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” The competition, initiated in 1982, includes hundreds of thousands of high school students from across the nation. One piece from each congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building. The winning students are invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony in Washington, DC on June 24, 2009.
“Art plays an important role in educating our young people,” said Congressman Higgins. “I am amazed by the outstanding pieces submitted by students each year. This competition gives us an opportunity to highlight the great talent we have here in Western New York in a national forum.”
This year Congressman Higgins’ office received 102 art pieces from 16 high schools. Serving as judges for Congressman Higgins’ district were Leslie Zemsky, a local artist and Albright Knox Art Gallery Board Member and Caroline Barry, a local artist and freelance writer. All submissions were on public display in first floor lobby at the Larkin at Exchange Building from May 6th through May 16th. On May 16th Congressman Higgins hosted a ceremony for teachers, students and their families where the top winners were announced.
