Congressman Higgins Announces Over $2.6 Million for Lead Hazard Elimination Efforts in Chautauqua County

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded Chautauqua County with a grant totaling $2,641,354.  The funds are provided through HUD’s Lead Hazard Control Program.

“The same older housing stock that contributes to Chautauqua County’s character also adds to the risk factor for lead poisoning,” said Congressman Higgins.  “This sizeable grant will support education and prevention to reduce this risk and keep our children and neighborhoods safe.”

The purpose of the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control (LHC) grant programs is to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible property. Chautauqua County will use the grant to make 175 housing units lead safe, train 80 individuals in lead safe work practices, educate 104 families about lead-safe cleaning techniques, conduct at least 20 community outreach events and train another 34 individuals in EPA certified lead abatement procedures.

Many homes built before 1978 have some lead paint.  Lead poisoning, which occurs when children swallow invisible lead dust created by chipping paint, can lead to: Attention Deficit Disorder,  loss of IQ and/or mental retardation, hearing loss, learning disabilities, convulsions/seizures, high blood pressure  Almost one million children under age six in the U.S. suffer from lead poisoning.
