Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced special payments are now available to over 185,000 service members who have had their enlistments involuntarily extended since September 11, 2001. The provision provides service members with $500 for every month they were held under stop-loss orders. The measure was included in H.R.2346, the Supplemental Appropriation Act, approved by the House of Representatives on June 16, 2009 and signed by the President on June 24.
“The veterans and active duty service members who worked under extended orders have gone above and beyond in sacrificing their personal and family time for the protection of all American families,” said Congressman Higgins. “We are grateful for their dedication and proud to provide this relief in recognition of their service.”
The Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay is available to service members from every branch of the military who had their enlistment extended or retirement suspended due to Stop Loss between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009.
All applications for special pay must be submitted to the respective service department no later than Oct. 21, 2010. Family members of deceased service members should contact the appropriate military service for assistance in filing their claim. For more information:
This payment builds on a significant record of accomplishment for veterans and troops over the last two and a half years including: the New GI Bill, progress improving veterans’ hospitals and facilities, expanding economic opportunities for returning soldiers and improving care for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
