Congressman Higgins Announces Final Day to Register for Assistance in Areas Hit by Floods
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) is reminding residents of Chautauqua and Erie Counties that today is the final day to register for federal disaster assistance through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from funds made available following the severe floods that hit the area in early August.
"By registering for assistance with FEMA, businesses and residents will have the opportunity to recover and rebuild their homes and livelihood,” said Congressman Higgins. “I encourage all of those affected to utilize the federal resources through FEMA that will make this possible.”
Under FEMA’s
Public Assistance Grant program local governments receive aid to support and expedite response and recovery. Public assistance has been approved in all categories including: debris removal, emergency protective measures, roads & bridges, water control facilities, public buildings, public utilities and parks and recreation sites.
More than $6.2 million was made available through state and federal disaster assistance to help western New Yorkers in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Erie counties recover from the storms and flooding during August 8-10. Of these funds, more than $4.2 million was approved in disaster assistance for housing and disaster-related needs.
To apply for disaster assistance, go online to www.disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- and hearing-impaired. Today is the last day to register with FEMA and return the SBA low-interest loan application.
