Congressman Higgins Announces $2.5 Million For Jamestown Green Energy Project
Federal Stimulus Funding Aimed at Developing Innovative and Efficient Green Energy Infrastructure

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has been awarded $2,500,000 for improving renewable energy technologies.  The federal funds were made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to candidates eligible for $43 million in Green Innovation Grants.

“This project helps build upon local efforts to bring clean, renewable energy technologies that will strengthen the economy to Jamestown,” said Congressman Brian Higgins. “This investment is just one example of how the stimulus bill passed by Congress earlier this year is helping communities like Jamestown invest in a sustainable future.”

The program is designed to improve bio-solids processing and digester methane gas capture in order to utilize digester gas for renewable energy—a green, innovative and alternative fuel technology.  It replaces outdated equipment from the 1950s, demonstrating a much needed upgrade.  This investment aims to develop infrastructure for long term power conservation and independence.  Through improving the treatment process at BPU, there will be a reduced dependence on grid power.  Also, onsite production of energy further reduces reliance on large power plants.

Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is one of fifty-eight Recovery Act projects announced in the state of New York through the Green Innovation Grants which includes municipalities, non-profits, and businesses.  The Act specifies that states to direct 20% of their Recovery Act funding to energy and water efficiency projects.  For more information about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, please visit www.recovery.gov.
