| WASHINGTON, DC -- West Philadelphia residents who depend on the services of the U.S. Postal Center at 4123 Lancaster Avenue can breathe a sigh of relief. Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) says that facility will remain open thanks to the concerted efforts of a newly appointed postmaster and community leaders.
“I am delighted that the new Postmaster of Philadelphia, Mr. Henry Dix, recognized the needs of the community and worked diligently to keep the post office open,” said Fattah. “Closing it would have had an adverse effect on the entire West Philadelphia area.”
Businesses and community organizations had been concerned that the revitalization and redevelopment of the Belmont/Lancaster Avenue Commercial Corridor would suffer if the facility closed. Senior citizens concerned that they would be forced to travel miles to pay their utility bills, a service conveniently provided at the Lancaster location, joined the effort to keep the neighborhood post office open.
“It’s vital that we work together to bring additional services to the West Philadelphia area, not sit idly by and watch as established services go,” said Fattah. “It’s a happy ending and a new beginning for the community.” |
