SHUSTER ANNOUNCES NOMINATIONS TO UNITED STATES SERVICE ACADEMIES

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster has made his final selections on candidates for the service academies, including the United States Air Force Academy, United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.  Area high school students hoping to attend one of these historic and prestigious American institutions submitted an application to Congressman Shuster’s office last fall.  After a competitive selection process, these students now have the opportunity to compete for an official appointment from the academy.

“There are a variety of criteria that I look at to determine which students should be nominated,” said Shuster, a member of the Armed Services Committee in Congress.  “They include academics, community service, leadership abilities and extracurricular activities such as athletics, club participation or another after-school activity.”

Students in the Ninth Congressional District interested in applying to a service academy for next year can contact Congressman Shuster’s office for the application or find it online at http://www.house.gov/shuster/academies.htm, which also provides a fact sheet on the process.

“The service academies are very competitive and demanding, and it is an honor to attend any of them,” said Shuster.  “These students have worked hard to get here, and they all have a remarkable dedication to their country and to serve.  It is now up to the service academies to make their decision, but we all should be proud of these students.”

In addition to the academies listed above, students may also apply for the United States Merchant Marine Academy located at Kings Point, Long Island, which is about twenty miles east of New York City.
