Rep. Pitts Joins Important Energy Subcommittee for the 111th Congress

Subcommittee will be ground zero for new energy legislation

Washington- Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16) will join the Energy and Environment Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee for the 111th Congress.  The assignment will be in addition to his current service on the Health Subcommittee as well as the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection.
 
“Our nation’s energy policy is one of the most important issues facing Congress, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve on the subcommittee that will be front and center in crafting that policy.  I will work to strengthen our nation’s energy security as we upgrade, modernize, and transform our energy infrastructure.  We need to advance an all of the above strategy that utilizes all of the available resources at our disposal, including clean alternative energies like wind, solar, nuclear and hydrogen.”

Background

Below is a description of the legislative jurisdiction of each subcommittee.

The Subcommittee on Energy and Environment has jurisdiction over national energy policy generally, including fossil energy, renewable energy resources and synthetic fuels; energy conservation; energy information; energy regulation and utilization; utility issues and regulation of nuclear facilities; interstate energy compacts; nuclear energy and waste; the Safe Drinking Water Act; the Clean Air Act.

The Subcommittee on Health has jurisdiction over public health and quarantine; hospital construction; mental health and research; biomedical programs and health protection in general, including Medicaid and national health insurance, as well as food and drugs and drug abuse.

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection has jurisdiction over interstate and foreign commerce; regulation of commercial practices, including sports-related matters; consumer affairs and consumer protection, including privacy matters generally; consumer product safety and product liability; motor vehicle safety; regulation of travel, tourism, and time; and, toxic substances and noise pollution.
