LANGEVIN ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDS FOR WESTERLY AND QUONSET AIRPORTS

U.S. Department of Transportation Provides Resources to Maintain State's Airfields

(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded the Rhode Island Airport Corporation $180,000 to improve the runway and taxiway at Westerly State Airport and $150,000 to assess the current and future needs of Quonset Airport.

"I am pleased the FAA has provided these funds to enhance aircraft safety at Westerly Airport," said Congressman Jim Langevin.  "Whether large or small, all of our airports must be kept in safe working order.  With these additional funds Westerly Airport will have additional resources with which to support Rhode Island's critical tourism industry and allow visitors to enjoy all of our state's natural beauty and other attractions."

The DOT reports that the pavement for Runway 7-25 and Taxiway A at Westerly Airport has exceeded its useful life and shows signs of deterioration. Through this grant, the design of the reconstruction of Runway 7-25 and partial Taxiway A will be accomplished.   Under the master plan update for Quonset Airport, information will be collected to identify future facility requirements for Quonset State Airport.  Alternatives to meet future requirements will be developed and evaluated based upon feasibility. An environmental review of the alternatives will be conducted, as well as development of a financial plan for short, mid and long-term facility needs.
