USDA AWARDS BLOCK ISLAND FEDERAL FUNDS
TO REPLACE WATER LINES

Grant & Loan Combination to Meet Increasing Demands of Water Supply
During Peak Tourist Season; Enhance Fire Fighting Services

(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded the Town of New Shoreham a $384,255 federal grant and $179,445 loan to upgrade existing water supply lines under the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program.

Langevin personally visited Block Island last Wednesday to hear of a number of issues facing Block Island and its residents.

“This federal award will greatly enhance the water distribution system of Block Island, providing island residents with a steady flow during the busy summer months and the less demanding winter months,” said Congressman Langevin.  “While Block Island is generally referred to as a vacation destination, it is important to remember that close to one thousand Rhode Islanders make their homes on New Shoreham.  We must not neglect basic municipal services for these Rhode Islanders residing off our shoreline.”

According to the USDA, the Rural Development Funds will be used to replace the current 6-inch water lines with 10-inch lines to provide adequate supply in the peak season, supply water for fire protection and loop all water lines.  The current 6-inch line is inadequate to meet the current and future demands.

The USDA also reports that an emergency generator will be supplied at the water treatment plant.  Currently, there is no backup source of power should the main power source be lost.

The loan will be paid over a period of 40 years at 4.50 percent.
