LANGEVIN APPLAUDS DECISION TO FORGIVE DEBT

(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) offered the following statement regarding the decision by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the African Development Bank to forgive approximately $40 billion in debt for 18 nations (primarily in Africa):

“I applaud the international financial community’s decision to provide debt relief to some of this world’s poorest nations. By forgiving approximately $40 billion in debt, the world community is making a bold commitment to help in the fight against poverty and infectious diseases, including the AIDS epidemic.

“Just like at home, when we can help to lessen the burdens of poverty, families thrive, communities strengthen and nations becoming contributing, thoughtful stakeholders on the world stage. Now, rather than struggling to make debt payments to the world’s wealthiest nations, these 18 countries can instead dedicate their resources to improving health care, creating jobs, enhancing education and generally raising the standard of living for their citizens. And as nations become stronger, efforts can be redirected towards cultural exchanges, economic development, democracy-building and other initiatives. I believe strongly that as the third world realizes its potential, diplomacy will become a forethought and flexing military might an afterthought.

“Rhode Islanders should be encouraged by this landmark decision as it reinforces our nation’s image as one that reaches out to those in need. This relief package will help millions of people who are hungry for hope and opportunity. Feeding that hunger will work to ensure our nation’s security in a peaceful way and solidify our reputation as a compassionate and caring country.”
