(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) offered the following statement today about President George W. Bush’s decision to nominate Harriet E. Miers to the position of Supreme Court Associate Justice: “As I stated during Chief Justice Roberts’ nomination process, I will be watching this latest Supreme Court nomination in the Senate with keen interest along with the rest of America,” said Langevin. “While I am encouraged that the President has chosen to nominate a woman, the most important criteria are reason and moderation, and whether Ms. Miers fits that profile remains to be determined. I believe the Senate is under more pressure in reviewing this nominee as she is replacing retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who often cast critical swing votes and proved to be a leader of the court. I expect the Senate to thoroughly vet Ms. Miers through initial fact finding and subsequent hearings.” -30- | |
