| (Warwick, R.I.) - Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today voted for H.R. 2638, The Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act of 2009. Included in this larger bill was the Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2009 and the Military Construction-Veteran Affairs Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2009. The bill passed by a vote of 370 to 58. “I was proud to support this bipartisan commitment to our servicemembers and their families,” said Langevin. “This defense bill promotes our main policy objectives: restoring military readiness; taking care of the troops and their families; increasing focus on the war in Afghanistan; and improving interagency cooperation, oversight, and accountability.” The following funding provisions were included in the bill at Langevin’s urging: • $300 million for advance procurement of components for an additional Virginia-class submarine • $4 million for Sea Based Strategic Deterrent/Undersea Launched Missile Study • $2 million for Reduction of Weapon System Downtime Rapid Repair Structural Adhesives • $ 1.5 billion for the production of the third DDG-1000/Zumwalt-class destroyer • $7.7 million for the construction of an air traffic control tower at Quonset Airport -30- |
