DHS Announces Equipment Funding

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today announced funding for West Warwick, North Kingstown, Narragansett and East Greenwich through the Department of Homeland Security’s Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program. The award comes out of the DHS Office of Grants and Training.

“This competitively awarded funding allows local agencies to purchase equipment needed to enhance daily operations and improve emergency responses,” said Langevin. “Giving agencies the discretion to make improvements beyond their standard equipment only makes for safer communities.”

  • West Warwick Police Department will receive $2,936 to purchase ArcGIS (geographic information systems). ArcGIS will give agencies the flexibility to deploy this technology wherever it is needed – on the desktop or in the field.
  • Town of North Kingstown (planning department) will receive $2,936 to purchase ArcGIS
  • Narragansett Police Department will receive $40,159 to purchase a video detective. Video detective equipment is thermal imaging and night vision video surveillance equipment that can stabilize and enhance live and recorded video
  • East Greenwich Fire District will receive $15,061 to purchase stedi-eye gyro stabilized binoculars with night vision eye pieces
  • The Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program provides smaller law enforcement and emergency agencies with equipment that will enhance and support regional response, mutual aid and interoperability. CEDAP, recognizing the importance of new equipment training and education to ensure proper deployment and operation, also requires training session attendance prior to receipt of the equipment. CEDAP provides travel, lodging and a limited per diem for one agency representative to attend training.
