Nation Can't Dig, Drill Out of Energy Crisis

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today sent a letter to President George W. Bush expressing concern about the domestic energy supply and calling on him to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if he determines it will prevent oil and gasoline price increases.  He also used the opportunity to ask that the President promote a comprehensive energy policy that encourages new clean and renewable sources and promotes energy efficiency.

The decision by BP to close a major oil field at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska because of pipeline corrosion prompted Langevin to write the letter. Oil prices surged today to a near record $76 per barrel after the company’s announcement.

“My constituents in Rhode Island are already struggling to afford exorbitant gasoline prices, and, as autumn approaches, high home heating oil costs could pose an additional problem,” wrote Langevin. “As a result, I ask that you use your authority to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if it is determined that the Prudhoe Bay closure will have a significant impact on oil and gasoline prices.”

The BP oilfield accounts for approximately eight percent of domestic oil production, and this disruption will exacerbate existing problems in the petroleum market.  Continued instability in Iraq and the uncertain situation in Iran have heightened concerns about supply disruptions, while increased demand from nations such as India and China will likely push the cost of oil even higher.

“Unfortunately, despite your declaration during this year’s State of the Union address that “America is addicted to oil,” our nation has yet to undertake the necessary steps to end our reliance on this fossil fuel and to move toward clean and renewable sources of energy,” Langevin continued. “It is time that our nation recognizes that we cannot drill or dig our way out of the current crisis.  Our energy policy is still rooted in the outdated notion of unlimited global oil reserves, and unless we change direction soon, our economy and the American people will suffer.”

Langevin is a strong supporter of the New Apollo Energy Act, which would vastly expand the nation’s use of clean and renewable energy through the development of new technologies and energy efficiency programs. In 2006, families are paying $3,200 more in household costs than in 2001 due to rising energy costs and gas prices, which have reached the second highest level in history.   -30-
