Humane Society Praises Langevin's Commitment

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) was once again honored with the Humane Advocate Award for his leadership on animal protection legislation in 2007. The honor was given by the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Legislative Fund.

“I am proud to receive this important recognition,” said Langevin, a member of the Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus. “Congress had many important successes for animal advocates in 2007. We passed legislation that toughens penalties for violations of animal fighting laws as well as a bill that will permanently retire chimpanzees in the national sanctuary system, ensuring that they cannot be reclaimed for research.”

Langevin was one of 132 federal lawmakers recognized for leading efforts in Congress to protect animals. Furthermore, he is one of 52 Members of Congress being presented with the “Humane Advocate” award for having a perfect score on the Humane Society Scorecard for 2007.  Factors in the scoring system included co-sponsorship of legislation clarifying fur labeling laws and prohibiting horse slaughter. The Society also took into account critical votes, such as an amendment to strengthen protections for polar bears from sport hunting.

“Mr. Langevin has shown a consistent and deep commitment to animal welfare, and The Humane Society of the United States and our supporters in Rhode Island are very grateful for his efforts in Congress,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS.

The Humane Society of the United States has more than 19,737 supporters in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District and more than ten million nationwide.
