Infrastructure Protection Funding Comes to Rhode Island

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today announced funding for Rhode Island from the Department of Homeland Security Infrastructure Protection Program. This program is designed to strengthen the country’s ability to protect critical infrastructures and systems.

“I am glad DHS has recognized that Rhode Island should receive this funding, as the state contains several critical infrastructure targets that could be vulnerable to a man made or natural disaster,” said Langevin, Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity and Science and Technology. “This funding will provide an opportunity for Rhode Island agencies to strengthen public safety programs in our communities.”

Under the Infrastructure Protection Program agencies are eligible to receive Port Security, Transit Security and Buffer Zone Protection Grants. These grants are intended to fund a range of preparedness activities, including strengthening infrastructure against explosive attacks, preparedness, planning, training, exercises, equipment purchases, security management and administrative costs.

The following agencies are receiving funding:

  • Providence Emergency Management Agency will receive a $428,603 Port Security Grant to expand its port area waterside video surveillance system
  • Prov Port will receive a $53,488 Port Security Grant to improve security at its rail entrances, gates and switching equipment
  • Rhode Island Fast Ferry will receive a $27,803 Port Security Grant
  • RIPTA will receive a $721,367 Transit Security Grant
  • Rhode Island EMA will receive a $692,500 Buffer Zone Protection Grant
