Sullivan-Murphy Attends Summit on America's Children

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today announced that he invited Reva Sullivan-Murphy, a child care administrator at the Rhode Island Department of Human Services, to attend the National Summit on America’s Children in Washington, D.C.

At the Summit, national experts and scholars presented recent scientific findings on how children’s brains are shaped, how positive behaviors can be encouraged and how investments in early childhood create success in later years. This meeting, convened by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is a first step in making certain that federal policies on children reflect these latest scientific developments.

“America’s children are the future of our nation and it is our obligation to ensure we have the right federal policies in place today to prepare them to be productive, successful members of society,” said Langevin. “The findings presented at this summit will help shape legislation and make certain that families are given what they need to take advantage of scientific advances.”

Sullivan-Murphy has dedicated her entire career to early education and child care. She has worked for the past eight years at the Department of Human Services and prior to that she spent 25 years as an early childhood teacher and consultant. She is a member of the National Association of State Childcare Administrators executive committee representing New England and is currently pursuing her doctorate at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management.

“I am delighted that Reva was able to take time from her schedule to attend this summit,” continued Langevin. “Her dedication to children should be commended and I hope she was able to learn some valuable information at today’s summit to bring back to Rhode Island.”
