| (Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) announced today the results of the Reading, Writing and Readiness Survey that asked schools in the Second Congressional District to assess their level of emergency preparedness. The announcement was made at Chariho Regional High School.
“I am pleased that so many schools, such as those in the Chariho Regional School District, have made safety an essential part of their efforts,” said Langevin, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee. “However, this report illustrates that while schools recognize the importance of having active emergency plans, more needs to be done. I am confident that this new information will help to open a dialogue among schools and local, state and federal agencies to keep students, faculty and staff safe before, during and after emergency situations.” Langevin, in conjunction with other Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee, mailed a 32 question survey to every public school and school district in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District to asses their preparedness in November 2005. The collected responses show that while most schools have developed a plan to protect their students, faculty, and staff, many schools have not adequately rehearsed their plans, and nearly a quarter of schools are unsure who to ask for additional assistance. Langevin vowed to continue advocating for school safety in an effort to provide schools with access to the resources they need. “Upon reviewing the survey findings one point was made abundantly clear – the government needs to better communicate about the resources available to help educators and administrators,” said Langevin. “It is my hope that by releasing this information, a dialogue starts today in classrooms and meeting rooms alike to ensure we are working together efficiently to strengthen school safety.” Langevin offered the following tips for schools to consider: | |
