Congressman Clyburn Announces $394,000 HUD Grant for Telamon Corporation

(Washington, DC) - Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn announced Thursday a $394,000 grant given to Columbia-based Telamon Corporation by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Telamon primarily serves the Williamsburg County area.

HUD awarded the grant to be used for the training of disadvantaged youth, ages 16 to 24, in the construction trades while helping program participants earn their general equivalency high school diplomas. The young people also obtain necessary social services, training in leadership skills and opportunities for placement in apprenticeships with the goal of assisting participants in achieving economic self-sufficiency.

“So many people in South Carolina are searching desperately for jobs but lack formal education or training,” Congressman Clyburn said. “This grant aims at changing all that by challenging our youth to obtain the proper education that will help them join profile of our evolving work force.”

HUD awarded this week 102 Youthbuild grants like this one, and the grants totaled $53,822,000. The grants will go to 100 local governments, housing authorities and non-profit groups to carry out such programs. The construction training component of the program results in the construction or rehabilitation of housing for the homeless and low-income families. Two other such grants were also awarded within the Sixth Congressional District.
