Congressman Higgins Discusses Economic Impact of Biopharmaceutical Research Industry on WNY & NYS
 
Congressman Higgins joined the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and the New York Biotechnology Association for a news conference at Roswell Park Cancer Institute to announce findings of a new study by Archstone LLC which shows the biopharmaceutical industry’s strong potential for helping to grow the regional and state economy well into the future.

Highlights of the study include:
  • New York is among the top three states leading the way in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • NY ranks second, behind California, in direct biopharmaceutical jobs and fourth in total (direct and indirect) employment
  • The state is also second in the nation conducting clinical trials – over 5,000 clinical trials in 2008
    • NY ranks number one in ongoing clinical trials for cancer related conditions
    • And number two in clinical trials related to heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other rare diseases
Jobs
  • The industry supports over 130,000 jobs statewide and almost 10,800 jobs in WNY Biopharmaceutical employment in NY grew by 1.8% from 1996-2006, outpacing all other industry sectors
  • These are quality jobs with $3.8 billion in wages paid to direct employees annually 
  • The statewide average wage paid to a biopharmaceutical employee was over $68,000
Economy
  • In Buffalo the industry generates an economic output of over $1.9 billion
  • In NYS the economic output exceeds $29.1 billion
