News from Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo

House Passes Fire Grants Reauthorization Act of 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 18, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 3791, the “Fire Grants Reauthorization Act of 2009.” H.R. 3791 passed by a vote of 395 yeas to 31 noes and was sponsored by Congressman Harry E. Mitchell of Arizona.  Congresswoman Bordallo is a co-sponsor of this legislation.  H.R. 3791 authorizes a total of $2.2 billion a year in competitive grants to upgrade equipment and maintain adequate personnel levels.  This bill also provides assistance for fire awareness and prevention activities, as well as fire safety related research.  The Guam Fire Department will be eligible to apply for these grants.

“The Fire Grants Reauthorization Act of 2009 provides funding to assist our local fire department in preventing and fighting fires,” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said today. “As our island’s first responders during a disaster, the Guam Fire Department will be able to apply for competitive grants as part of the $2.2 billion in available funding authorized by this bill.  This federal financial assistance will help the Guam Fire Department upgrade needed equipment and maintain an adequate level of personnel to continue to protect our community.  I will continue to work with my colleagues on this issue, and I look forward to seeing the Guam Fire Department benefit from H.R. 3791.”
